Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. Elevate EMS is an approved Virginia EMT education program operating under the Virginia Office of EMS. The program’s Course Coordinator is Nicholas Brown. Students are welcome to verify our program approval status directly with the Virginia Office of EMS if desired.

  • A hybrid EMT course blends online learning with hands-on, in-person training. You’ll complete the academic portion at your own pace through our online platform, with optional weekly live Q&A sessions on Google Meet for support and discussion.

For clinical experience, students obtain patient contacts through their own rescue squad, a clinic, or we can help coordinate with an ambulance transport company if needed.

At the end of the course, you’ll attend a week-long Skills Academy where you’ll receive intensive hands-on training and complete your psychomotor exam, one of the required steps for NREMT certification.

  • Before starting the course, students need to meet the following requirements (CPR certification can be completed during the program if you don’t already have it):

    • Be 16 years old by the start of the course

    • Be proficient in reading, writing, and speaking the English language

    • Have reliable internet access to complete online coursework

    • Have no physical or mental impairment that would render you unable to perform all practical skills required at the EMT level

    • Have a CPR certification for healthcare providers - if you don’t have this yet, we can provide it during the program

    • Pass a criminal background check via Fieldprint

      • Not have been convicted of or found guilty of any crime, offense or regulatory violation, or participated in any other prohibited conduct identified in state EMS regulation

  • Our course typically takes 14-18 weeks, depending on the schedule of the in-person sessions. You’ll have access to online materials at the start of the course (during orientation) and progress through each module with guidance and support from your instructors before attending your in-person training.

  • The online portion is self-paced, so you can complete it on your own time within the course window. We’ll provide a suggested weekly schedule to help you stay on track, but you’re free to move at whatever pace works best for you—as long as you finish before Academy Week.

The in-person skills sessions are scheduled in advance and must be attended in person on the assigned dates.

  • Our in-person Skills Academy is held in Virginia. The exact location will be provided to enrolled students before the start of the course.

You can find upcoming academy week dates listed on the ‘EMT’ tab of our website—this is also where you’ll enroll.

  • Here’s a step-by-step overview of how our program prepares you for EMT certification:

    ⓵ Complete the Course

Finish our state-approved hybrid EMT program, which includes flexible online coursework and required hands-on skills labs.

⓶ Pass the Psychomotor (Skills) Exam

We host the official psychomotor exam at the end of your course, during our in-person Academy Week. You’ll be fully prepared and tested on the hands-on skills needed to function as an EMT.

    ⓷ Pass the NREMT Exam

We prepare you to take and pass the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) written exam — the certification accepted in most U.S. states.

    ⓸ State Licensure

    • Virginia Students: After passing the NREMT exam, your results are automatically shared with the Virginia Office of EMS, and you’ll be issued your state EMT certification—no extra application needed.

    • Out-of-State Students: Most states accept NREMT — you’ll apply for licensure through your state’s EMS office.
➤ You can check our Reciprocity page to see what your state requires.

  • Yes. Once you’ve successfully passed our class and the psychomotor skills exam we host, we will issue you an Authorization to Test (ATT) for the NREMT exam. After passing the NREMT exam, you will then be awarded your VA State and National Registry EMT Certifications.

  • Upon successful completion of this course, you’ll be eligible to take the NREMT exam. Once you pass, you will be awarded your National and Virginia state EMT certifications.

If you plan to work outside Virginia, please visit your state’s Office of EMS website to determine reciprocity and any additional requirements for certification transfer.

You’ll also receive BLS CPR certification as part of the program, if needed.

  • Yes—our course prepares you for the NREMT (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians) exam, which is recognized in most U.S. states. After passing, you can usually apply for EMT licensure in other states through reciprocity or a state-specific process.

If you’re in Virginia, completing our course and passing the NREMT makes you eligible for EMT certification in Virginia—you’ll be testing here, and we guide you through the state licensure process.

For students from out of state, the NREMT is widely accepted and can often be transferred through state reciprocity. Requirements vary, so we recommend checking with the EMS office in the state where you plan to work. You can find links to each state’s licensing info on the NREMT State EMS Agencies page or see if your state participates in the EMS Compact (REPLICA), which allows licensed EMTs to practice across member states.

  • Once enrolled, you’ll have access to the student page of our website. This page includes:
