Reciprocity & Compact States: Where Your EMT Certification Can Take You
The NREMT certification is recognized by all 50 states, which means you can use it as the foundation to become certified in your home state.
In most states, transitioning is straightforward - often just a matter of submitting an application and a background check.
Upon completing our program, you will graduate with:
National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Certification
Virginia State EMT Certification
-
These states accept NREMT certification with minimal additional requirements (often just an application and background check). A few states require completing a brief state-specific training module/protocol test.
-
A small number of states require additional steps beyond your NREMT, such as completing a state-approved EMT refresher or bridge course and/or passing a state-specific written or practical EMT exam.
EMS Compact (REPLICA) States
If you’re licensed in a REPLICA member state, you can temporarily practice in other member states without needing a separate license. This is especially helpful if you:
Are working as a traveling EMT
Have just moved to a new state and are waiting on licensure
Are filling short-term or emergency coverage roles
⚠️ Important Note:
REPLICA is not a substitute for permanent licensure in your home state.
If you live and primarily work in another Compact state, you are expected to apply for licensure in that state as soon as possible.
